Hope everyone gets to read the current "Retired Officer" since there is an extesive article on the 18th's transition from F-51's to jets. Never mentioned, however, that in 1951 and 1952 we were getting jet-qualified pilots, some from West Point, who were not exactly thrilled at going into combat with F-51's that had been flown in Europe, flown by the Air National Guard, pickled and then brought back to life for combat in Korea!

After seven years, I left the USAF and went to college at the University of Alabama. In four years of steady school I got a BS & MS in Mechanical Engineering. I then went to work for the US Navy as a civilian. Now retired. I was in advanced technology for aircraft engines for the most part. I then specialized in engine failure prediction using the Weibul methodology. I never did get away from the Military.

I was so delighted to be informed of your site by one of the daughters of Lucien Bob Shuler, USAF Ret. His wife, Barbara Fay Shuler is the sister of my Father. Uncle Bob has always been loved and admired by the entire Bedingfield family. We all knew of his military career and everyone of us followed his career in earnest. After WW11 he inspired my father, a farmer, into buying a Piper Cub and helped him learn to fly. Uncle Bob was a hero to all of us, but he was always modest about his own exploits and was quick to point out that all of his fellow pilots, and indeed everyone that has served our country are heros. I will always remember him as a kind and loving man, devoted to his nation and family. The memory of Uncle Bob will always be passed down to our children and their children. When we buried Uncle Bob it was indeed a sad day for us all and not a dry eye could be found. God bless you all. Keep up this wonderful work.

Background ICO 1st Lt. Allan Bettis, USAF, MIA April 1952...

The following information was excerpted from the April 1952 unit history report prepared by the 12th FBS. It is provided in response to a previous request in this Guestbook by his niece, Ms. Angelyn Bales, for more information about the circumstances of his loss.

...

In April 1950, the 12th FBS was based at K-10/Chinhae, near Pusan. As a component squadron of the 18th Fighter Bomber Wing, the 12th flew combat missions from a “staging base” near Hoengsong, Korean called K-46.

The Commanding Officer of the 12th was LTC Joseph T. Crane, Jr.

At that time, the 12th had a total of 25 Mustangs assigned, somewhat more than usual “due to the departure of the 39th Fighter Interceptor Squadron and the subsequent pooling of their aircraft among the remaining squadrons.”

Some changes in tactics were noted that month that were “worthy of mention.” Due to “excessive combat damage in the past, our flights are restricted to only two passes at a target on close support missions, a bombing and strafing pass followed by a rocket pass.”

The procedures of “capping” [short for Combat Air Patrol] a downed pilot were also changed “in hopes that the change will cut down the losses suffered on capping missions.

“The ever-growing intensity and accuracy of enemy flak has taken a heavy toll in aircraft and pilots recently, and our tactics have taken a more cautious course as a direct result. The actual capping of a downed pilot must remain to the discretion of the capping flight, however, they are asked to circle at a safe altitude, keeping an eye on the downed pilot’s position and keeping contact with him over the bail-out radio which every pilot must carry. No attacking passes will be made unless the capping flight has complete command of the situation. The 12th took part in several successful capping missions during the month, using similar tactics.”

Group rail cutting missions have become the rule of the day as a result of a comparatively new policy of the Fifth Air Force which has proven quite effective, the report noted. A small section of track is “assigned as a target and then bombed all day long until there is virtually nothing to bomb other than the bomb holes already there. These missions are in Group [18th Fighter Bomber Group, i.e. four squadrons participating and each probably supplying one flight of four Mustangs] strength on a turn about basis and have proven very effective. Railroads that have been out of commission for only a few hours at the most, are now being knocked out for many days.”

Missions for the 12th (and other squadrons of the 18th FBG) “have extended much farther north than in the recent past and last an average of about two and a half hours apiece. The intensive damage to a relatively small section of track rather than individual cuts over a large section has thwarted the enemy’s very efficient repair system.”

Like other squadrons in the 18th FBG, the 12th relied on a training program that “has been taken over entirely by the Group…a thorough training program has been established. A new man now receives an average of six training missions with ample practice in gunnery, bombing, aerobatics, cross-country and night flying. All indications show that this training should prove quite effective and the pilots should be thoroughly competent before joining a combat flight.”

During April, the “Foxy Few” flew a total of 414 sorties, averaging nearly ten sorties per pilot. In the process, some 900 combat hours were logged, or approximately 22 hours per pilot during that month. Because K-46 was so near the “bomb line,” most of the hours were logged “on the enemy side.”

The 12th lost two pilots that month, including: Lt. Allan S. Bettes (sic) and Lt. Lawrence Wolfe. The unit history report notes that “Lt. Bettes (sic) was lost on a rail-cutting mission” on April 15th and Lt. Wolfe “went down diving a close support mission” on April 26th.

It also notes that Lt. Bretting was “rescued by SA-16 after crash landing his aircraft on a mud flat in North Korea" on April 23. “In all we lost three aircraft to combat and one to reasons other than combat. We suffered an unfortunate number of minor accidents during the month, only one serious enough to destroy a plane completely, however.”

“Morale, never a problem in the 12th, has, if anything, improved with the assignment of additional aircraft to the Squadron and the arrival of Spring and warm weather,” the report concluded.

“All show high spirits and pride in their work and their Squadron. The working hours are long and living conditions are poor, especially at K-46, where the comforts of home are sadly lacking. However, rest and recreation leaves and three points a month toward rotation more than suffice to keep spirits alive.”

Hello,

I came across the site while searching for info on several WWII 13th AAF aces. Very nice site with good info and great pictures. It also had something I've been looking for for 3 years. Let me explain. I am the webmaster for the website "The Jungle Air Force Of WW II". There are over 100 pages dedicated to the 13th AAF of WW II on my site and among those is a page showing all the squadron insignia. I knew the Foxy Few patch was not correct for WW II but I couldn't find the correct one until now. Only one problem, it's too small for me to use. Is there any chance I could get a larger picture of the 12th Fighter Squadron's patches, the "Dirty Dozen/Bloody Dagger" ones?

I'm going to provide a link to your site from my page. If you're interested feel free to link to my site.

Take care,
Larry E Long

I'd like to hear from anyone who knew 1LT Allan Shields Bettis. He was in the 12th Fighter Bomb Squadron, 18th Fighter Bomb Wing during the Korean War. He flew F-51's. On his 26th mission, his plane was gunned down. His MIA date is 04/13/52. He was presumed dead on 12/31/53. Allan was my uncle; he was my mother's only sibling. My mother and father live in Knoxville, TN. I've heard stories about, and descriptions of my uncle from my parents. I'd like to hear more stories about him if anyone has them. My father, Ivan Holshausen, served with 2 sqd SAAF 'Flying Cheetahs' in Korea. He trained on Mustangs but went operational on Sabres serving with the 18th up to the ceasefire (his Sabre was named 'RUTH II'). I have his full medal group (10 medals) after serving in the SAAF and Rhodesia. I have his Korean photo album and a very good collection of memorabelia including his original flight map. Dad is fit and flourishing and living in Zimbabwe (avoiding a different kind of war vet!). Dad attended the Korean War 50th anniversary reunion in Korea...wonderful experience. I am moving to the USA (Ohio) in January 2002 and look forward to developing my Korean war research. Just got back from the US...had an interesting visit to the Korean War Memorial in DC...very impressive. All the best, Keith Holshausen

I am a former member of the association and would like to renew my membership. Also I would like to make a small statement as to why I let my membership expire. I was a SSGT in 1952/53 and performed duty as a Instrument Tech on both the F-51 and later the F-86F. While nothaving a lot of contact with the pilots,We still were proud to be a part of big picture . I went to the conv. in Las Vegas and it seemed like I was the only enlisted person there.Very few people talked to me. It seemed to that the reunion was for pilots. I don,t remember in any of the speeches and discussions there was anything for or about the enlisted people except for the mention of a crew chief. Thanks for letting me sound off a little. As usual Bud and all - Great job- looking for some of the clowns I flew with- would like to locate Bill Strand

!!LBCR!!I was one of the "Boxer Boys" so called because our group of people crossed the Pacific on the Aircraft Carrier USS Boxer. We brought whole shipload of P-51's with us. They were off loaded at Yokahama, Japan, checked out by our fabulous P-51 ground crews and flown to Korea. We began flying combat missions against the North Koreans in July 1950. It was just a "Police Action" but from our viewpoint it appeared to be a real live war to all of us.

This is an idea that has long been overdo. After listening to my fathers war stories for many years I am glad to see that the many important details and true accounts of what really happened during the war are being recorded for others to experience. What our children learn in school and what is printed in school books is often inaccurate and lacks the realizim of what these young men went through. This will help others to truely understand what is ment by sacrafice and the meaning of PATRIOTISM.

What a great tribute to an outstanding organization and the people who served in the 18th FW over the years. I personally want to thank all who made this a reality and to Mr. Jim Heath for his expertise in developing the site. There is no doubt in my mind it will serve its purpose not only to former members, but to their family's. Last but not least, to Bud Biteman for his forsite in organizing the 18thFWA.

With the WWII recognition I see here I will payup my past dues and stay aboard.
With the space provided by the web why not show the WWII Squadron Insignia along with the later Korean and any other modifications they have had over the years?
I will try to put togather some pictures of late WWII period. Along with a group of us who had a 10 hour mission in the P-38 and many of 8.5 hours. Of course we had the longer range P-38 aircraft.

I have recently been introduced to the 18th FWA through the efforts of my granddaughter - Christianne Orear. I am the widow of Captain Harry C. Moore. We were stationed in the Philippines at the start of the Korean War (Police Action) and my husband was sent to Japan shortly thereafter and flew missions over Korea. He spent a year there and on June 1, 1951 during a strafing mission covering a downed aircraft was hit and went down over the South China Sea. He had been in WWII and had been shot down over the China Burma Theater. He "walked out" after nearly three months.
Harry and I had a daughter, Jana, born in the Philippines and Christianne is her daughter - my only grandchild. She has become very interested in information concerning her grandfather and has passed this along to me. I thank you, Bud, for this wonderful web page and will continue to visit this page.

I am the oldest son of Captain Elloitt Dean Ayer who disappeared while strafing an enemy truck convoy. He was the flight leader of 4 F-51 mustangs on a last light patrol south of Wonsan, North Korea, an explosion was seen but there no sign of plane wreckage and no contact could be made with our father. Reports indicate that no further search was conducted the following day or at any later date. Our father was lost on July 25,1952. Captain Ayer was based at Hoengsong(K-46) in 1952. Col. Bud: Just want to acknowledge with thanks the tremendous effort you've expended over past years in breathing life into the 18th FWA. The Association is deeply indebted to you for your considerable interest, hard work, and support. (I might add it's also indebted to Helen; I'm sure you couldn't have done it without her encouragement and assistance.) Your efforts to preserve the contributions of those who served in the 18th FWA will only grow in importance in coming years. My hats off to you.

Thanks to Col. Bud for his dedication to the brave men that fought in Korea and to his association with their families. Thanks also to the reference found to my Uncle 'Tony' Lawrenson in the book 'Flying Cheetahs in Korea', I will seek out this book to see his picture with Wells and Nortje and will perhaps try to contact them or to find out more about them. Apparently the book lists Uncle Tony as being 'A' Flight Commander, but what does the 'A' imply. Thanks again and regards, Laurence.

I have very much enjoyed prowling thru the website of the 18th FWA. It seems to remind me that flak sounds very much the same, no matter if you are flying in the ETO or the Pacific -- in 1943-44-45, or in 1970. could we do it again, as a country ? I think so.

In memory of my father, Capt. David Howard Grisham, USAF, WWII, Korea, MIA, September 3, 1950, Bout 1, with Dean Hess and one of the first eleven volunteers for the mission. He describes it as the "evacuation of our people" according to the diary my father kept, from June 26, 1950 through the last entry before he became missing in action, a couple of months later, where he muses about WWIII and whether the English speaking woman he heard on the radio he won the other night will be "tried like Tokyo Rose" ... the vacant hole living without him in my life has no description. I have been told he was well liked, had a sense of humor and two nicknames; "Smiling Jack" after a popular comic strip of the time and "Snowflake" for his prediction of snow in Tokyo during July (which did happen I hear). He "wore" his P-51, "it's my plane" he said, he was also a meteorologist, a skeet shooter (beat his commanding officer just before Korea) by breaking 100 out of 100, and to prove it was no accident repeated the score a few days later. He had a temper and did not like being told what to do. Oh, to have the opportunity to exchange a few hot headed, stubborn discussions with him and end with hearty laughter and most, most, most of all missed - a big hug!

I love you, Daddy!

Your daughter,
Barony

For whatever contribution I have given to this site, I would like all credit to go to:

- the dad that I truly loved, Capt. James D. Heath, 12th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 18th Fighter Wing, USAF (lost in Korea, March 8, 1951)..

- Lt. Col. Bud Biteman, who I treasure as a friend even though we have yet to actually meet and who has worked selflessly to see that the history of the 18th Fighter Wing is not lost.

- Penny Wilson, for her generous (and very much appreciated) efforts to help me contact my dad's comrades.

- to other friends like Col. Dewey Ballard, Col. Jim Kiser, Col. Jim Peek, Col. Steve Steele, Col. Harry Moreland, and Col. Salty Saltzman that I have met through the 18th FWA and who have given me support and suggestions in my quest to find those that knew my dad.

- to everyone that served in the 18th Fighter Wing and to all those that loved and admired them.

To each and all of you, I say thanks and, while I would like to close with words of my own, the finest closing I have seen was shared with me by Steve Steele and came from a true hero of the 18th Fighter Wing, Lt. Col. Roger Ames, who passed away a few months ago. His closing phrase was:

"Aim high and God bless"

I could never equal this closing and I hope Roger wouldn't mind me using it here.
