Lieutenant Frank Montanari was the leader of a flight consisting of Lt.
Beamish, No. 2, Lt. Lamb, No. 3 and Lt. McLeod, No. 4, who were briefed to conduct an armed reconnaissance from Inchon to Majon-ni and return. They set course and climbed to 1000 ft. They had to fly over dense clouds until it broke to about 5/8ths coverage. Montanari informed his flight that he was going below for a closer look at the road. He dived down along the side of a sloping hill and when he reached 2000 ft. his aircraft was hit by heavy flak and was streaming glycol as it pulled up to 3000 ft. He appeared to flick into a slight spin, recovered briefly and after losing about 1000 ft., he attempted to crash-land in a river bed, but the aircraft disintegrated upon impact. No sign of the pilot could be seen, and the heavy flak in the area prevented further investigation.
