J. O. HOLTZHAUSEN, Lieutenant SAAF

Killed in Action, Korea, 10 April, 1952

J. O. HOLTZHAUSEN, Lieutenant SAAF Killed in Action, Korea, 10 April, 1952 Lieutenant 'Holtsie' Holtzhausen was flying No. 2 on a flight of three aircraft led by Major Mouton. Captain van der Merwe flew No. 3 position. The flight was tasked to attack railroad traffic at YE-5004.

As they approached the target area they formed up in starboard echelon, and prior to his attack Mouton observed that both his No. 2 and No. 3 men were in their expected positions.

Visibility over the target area was very poor due to haze, and low clouds which forced the flight to drop their bombs from a lower altitude than was normal.

After the attack they headed for the pre-briefed form up point, and Mouton called his flight to check in by R/T. Only No. 3 checked in. He continued to call No. 2, and heard him reply that he was joining another, nearby USAF flight.

Mouton then returned to base where, upon arrival he was informed that Lieutenant Holtzhausen had not returned with any of the other flights. He failed to return from the flight and neither he nor his aircraft were ever found.
