N. 'Flash' BIDEN, Lieutenant, SAAF

Killed in Action, Korea, 5 September, 1951

Lieutenants 'Flash' Biden and Don Parker flew two Mustangs providing top cover for Lt. Willem van den Bos, who had been shot down near Sunch'on while engaged in the rescue of an American pilot. Willem's F-51 was hit in the cooling system by small arms fire, and his engine failed at 800 ft. but, although his plane was on fire, he managed to put it into a stream bed, jumped out and took cover in a nearby ditch until he was rescued by helicopter about 45 minutes later.

Res-cap top cover was flown by Biden and Parker, who were enroute to another target, where they were to napalm bomb an artillery position in the "Punchbowl" area.

Biden was last observed in a shallow diving attack on the artillery emplacement, but for unknown reasons failed to pull out of his dive, struck the ground and burst into flames. No sign of him being alive could be found.
