Roger Ames

(We plan to improve this biography considerably to try to reocognize some of the great attributes of this quiet gentleman but, for now, will start with this modest summary)

Born November 15, 1918, in Laramie, WY. Graduated from Laramie High School in 1937, went to University of Wyoming for 2 yrs, Class of '41.

Became Army Air Corps flying Cadet Apr, '41, graduated as 2nd Lt. in Air Corps Reserve on December 12, 1941. Assigned to fly P-40s at Oakland, CA municipal airport, guarding West Coast (1.5 months).

Sailed for Christmas Island with 12th Fighter Sqdn Jan 30, '42 where he flew P-39s for 9 months, then to Guadalcanal Oct 25, '42 where he flew 67 combat missions, 168 combat hours, in P-39s, then P-38s - including the April 18, 1943 mission which shot down Admiral Yamamoto.

After 17 months overseas, returned to US, arriving Kelly Fld, TX on Sept 3, 1943, from where he was reassigned to Barksdale Fld, LA as Maint. Officer and Test Pilot. Reassigned Nov 9, '44 to 26th Ftr Command, Albrook Fld, Panama Canal Zone, where he flew P-38s until Aug.'45.

Attended Command and Staff School, Ft. Leavenworth, KS from Aug '45 until Oct 15, '45, when he was transferred to Lowry Field, Denver, CO.

Discharged from Active duty following Terminal Leave: Jan 15, 1947.

Went to work as Fireman for Union Pacific Railroad at Laramie, WY until Apr '47, when he became Insurance Agent with New York Life Ins.

Inactive Reserve Service from Aug. '47 at Lowry AFB, Denver, CO. then with 301st Bomb Wing, and other units at Barksdale, LA until June 1966. Assigned to Retired Reserve as Lt. Colonel from Jan 20, 1968.
